Clapham is famous as the village in which the long campaign to abolish slavery was conducted by William Wilberforce and members of the Clapham Sect. Many people have chosen Clapham as their home, including the diarist Samuel Pepys. Clapham was also the place where the car that won the 1952 Monte Carlo rally was built.
