Originally the area revolved around monastic institutions, the Priory of St John of Jerusalem and St Mary's Nunnery. But from the late 17th century the Huguenots and Italians moved in and Clerkenwell became a centre of clock-making, printing and jewellery. The growth of the City of London spread to Finsbury and encouraged the building of Finsbury Square.
