The parishes of Hackney and Stoke Newington consisted, before the early 19th century, of a dozen small settlements, the straggling village called Hackney being the largest. Hackney then became the home of courtiers and rich merchants and Stoke Newington, with its many grand houses, was for a while the home of the Knights Templar. These two old London villages have had mixed fortunes. The farms and nursery gardens gave way to terraces, then came a long period of neglect until the post-war years and sustained renovation of the delightful streets.
