The town of Halifax is full of magnificent buildings designed by famous architects, such as Sir Charles Barry, John Carr and Sir George Gilbert Scott as well as the town’s own talented architects. Many of these wonderful buildings have been preserved and renovated over recent years. But even so, Halifax has still altered quite dramatically during the last 150 years and these many changes are reflected in Halifax Through Time.
All of the images featured here have come from Stephen’s own extensive collection. ‘The Gee Collection’ is the largest known private collection including, as it does, over 2,500 books, some dating back to the early 17th century, and over 30,000 photographs, postcards, prints and pictures from as early as the 1850s. Over the years material from the collection has been used on television and in local newspapers and has contributed to the production of over twenty local history books as well has a number of local exhibitions.
This fascinating selection of images depicts changes not only to Halifax’s buildings but also to its people and their general way of life, the shops, fashions, leisure activities, transport and road layouts.
Halifax Through Time brings all of these changes to life, contrasting the old with the new, and offers any would-be explorer a structured sequence of photographs, providing a useful and intriguing reference for a stroll around this vibrant and historic town.
