Hendon and Golders Green are two of London's most interesting suburbs: the former is most famous for its aerodrome and its aviation pioneers such as Claude Grahame-White.
Hendon has a history that begins with the Romans, and the ares has been tied to the economic needs of London since then. A rural district, which was renowned for its hay production, Hendon provided much of London's horse feed. From the 1900s until the 1980s the town was a hub of industrial activity, with hundreds of small manufacturing plants suppling components to larger companys.
Golders Green, then not much more than a crossroads surrounded by fields, was the unlikely choice for the terminus of the Northern Line in 1907. By 1912 it was an extensive suburb admired for its clean air and modestly priced houses.
The story of these two areas is told with the aid of 175 illustrations, many of which have not been published before.
