Throughout the second half of the 1930s, war with Germany seemed increasingly likely. The RAF, preparing for the coming struggle, formed Fighter Command in July 1936 under the legendary Air Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding. The first fighter base in Sussex was Tangmere. Others followed at Ford, Thorney Island, Westhampnett, Shoreham and Friston. During the Winter of 1939/40 Tangmere was expanded to house three Hurricane Squadrons and one Blenheim Squadron. Many heroes emerged from all these engagements. Some of them were well-known like Peter Townsend, Douglas Bader, Max Aitken and 'Johnnie' Johnson; others were not household names but were heroes nonetheless. Among these unsung heroes were the mechanics, desk staff, searchlight operators and gunners; fighting as a team to achieve victory.
