Highgate was still governed by manorial courts and early vestries when, in the 16th century, prosperous City residents settled there. At that time fairly isolated by its steep hills, Highgate did not expand significantly until the 19th century, when transport improvements made daily journeys to and from London a possibility. The expansion was generally, however, in harmony with the existing mansions, whose owners were by this time already succumbing to financial pressure, leading to private schools inhabiting the houses. Today, despite congestion and high house prices, Highgate retains its charm and many of its attractive buildings. Well illustrated and with an engaging narrative, this book tells the history of a place that, despite modern intrusions, has preserved its village atmosphere.
