The Highgate and Hornsey village parts were Victorian, but much of the rest is well-built late Victorian or Edwardian, which appealed to people who wanted to escape overcrowded central London. They also found they had marvellous views out over the smoke of the city, all the way down to the Thames and beyond. Over the years, unfortuntely, Hornsey lost many of its delightful old mansions as streets were developed.
