The London and Birmingham Railway Company, commissioned Robert Stephenson, son of the great railway pioneer, to build their line in the 1830s. Local companies followed suit quickly, many spurred on by Northamptonshire's thriving ironstone industry. By 1900, the county could boast a wide network of lines and no less than 92 stations. Sadly, the prosperity was not to last, and today just four stations remain. Fortunately, some of the 'lost' lines are now in the hand of preservation societies.
