This fascinating compilation of over 180 photographs explores one of inner London’s former Metropolitan Boroughs, and by the use of comparison images reveals some of the changes which have taken place in over a century.
The particular style of Marylebone’s streets is celebrated here, including the stately terraces of its eighteenth century transition from a rural environment to an intensely urban one.
Among them is Baker Street whose fictional detective gained the street worldwide recognition, and Oxford Street, effectively London’s High Street, whose style has changed as the small terraced shops of old were replaced by renowned department stores. There is also a look at the world’s most famous pedestrian crossing and the great landmark which arose at the crossing of two roman roads.
Sequences of images also show how the upmarket suburb of St. John’s Wood developed together with Lisson Green, a poor but vibrant London neighbourhood.
Memories of horse-filled streets and local traders are revived alongside the pubs, concert halls and transportation of yesteryear to give an intriguing and nostalgic portrait of what is now a characterful part of the modern City of Westminster.
