Written by one of Northumberland’s best-known authors and speakers, this book follows the courses of the rivers Tyne, Aln and Tweed, and dwells on a cluster of estates at Chillingham, Ford and Etal, to give a vivid series of cross-sections through the county’s landscape and history.
It is profusely illustrated with his photographs taken from the air and the ground, including such diverse topics as the world’s largest witherite mine in the Tyne valley to the Chillingham wild white cattle, and the numerous castles and estates that cover the county.
It ends with an account of the Battle of Flodden of 1513, which in so many ways encapsulates the ways in which the Borders were caught up in national politics and the ambition of kings, full of horror and heroism.
