Few Portsmouth residents today realise that Portsmouth once had its own airport. It ceased operating in 1973, having flourished for 41 years. Never a huge success it could hardly be described as a failure as it made an average profit of £2,000 a year.
In Portsmouth Transport From Old Photographs Ron Brown, through a carefully chosen selection of wonderful photographs accompanied by factual captions, looks at the many aspect of Portsmouth travel, from ferryboats, bicycles and trams to buses, trains and aircraft. This book evokes a delightful sense of the character and charisma of these bygone modes of transportation, especially when compared them to the transport of today.
Ron acknowledges that modern transport may be a lot more comfortable than it used to be but it is by no means as interesting or adventurous as it used to be.
