The two main themes in Putney's history have been the influence of London's growth and the adjacency of the Thames. One brought trade and the building of country villas and mansions; the other provided employment for numerous watermen. Roehampton, often described as a 'hamlet' of Putney, led a quieter, almost remote, life despite the fact that its village was uprooted and moved. It became a secluded area of aristocratic residences until modern times when local authority housing was built on their generous acres.
