Richmond did not exist as a place name until 1501, yet its recorded history goes back to the mid-10th century. It was known to the Anglo-Saxons and Normans as Shene and at the time of the Domesday Survey was part of the royal manor of Kingston. The book has a large collection of illustrations recalling the past from a village grouped around a royal palace to its development into a riverside resort and residential area. Yet it kept many of its picturesque houses, and the walk by the river is still a favourite outing for Londoners.
