For many the representations of Robin Hood in the media – from Errol Flynn to Richard Greene and from Robin of Sherwood to the most recent BBC re-imagining – is all they know of this fascinating legend.
Prompted by a book on the medieval archer that he wrote in 1985 which sparked an interest in the historical background for the legend, Jim Bradbury began to dig deeper than the picture that media representations present.
One of the clues he examines is the legend of Robert the Bruce, who may have helped shaped the common picture or Robin Hood. Like many before him, Jim hoped that his investigations would uncover a real man. Sadly, he discovered no such man, yet his quest uncovers many versions of the myth as he moves back through time.

Jim Bradbury is a retired lecturer in history with many books to his credit, including: The Medieval Archer (Boydell and Brewer 1985) and The Routledge Companion to Medieval Warfare (2004).
