Speke to Me traces the personal record and early development of a working-class boy in Liverpool.
The story starts shortly after the end of the Second World War and chronicles, in rich, intimate and colourful detail, many aspects of life within one of the city’s less affluent neighbourhoods and the fortunes of one family in particular. The book captures emotions such as the excitement and wonder, which were experienced when enjoying forays to far flung shores. These included trips across the Mersey to Hoylake and adventures up to Barrow-in-Furness. In contrast, there is the bewilderment when a loved member of the family dies. The tale offers a rare insight into the narrow window of time that we know as childhood and adolescence.
