Sydenham was once popular for its medicinal spring, but in the late 19th century it was known as the home of the Crystal Palace. The building's popularity encouraged development. Large family homes were built on the slopes overlooking London. To the north is Forest Hill which was originally a 40-acre wood on the northern edge of Sydenham Common.
