Enfield was once remarkable for its 'Chase' - a royal hunting ground of over 8000 acres. This was developed as from the early 19th century and new suburbs to the main town were formed.
Charles Lamb lived there with his sister at a time when the town featured fine houses and large private estates. To the east industry gathered force along the river Lee, especially the famous Royal Small Arms Factory which supplied essential weapons in the two world wars. Cheap railway travel encouraged quick development.
Enfield was the scene of two hard-fought educational battles, the first in the 19th century to resist the implementation of state education, and the second in the 20th century in opposition to the abolition of grammar schools.
In this book, compiled in an attractive A-Z format, are featured such diverse characters as Boris Karloff, Joseph Bazalgette, Betjeman, Radclyffe Hall and General Booth.
