The Temple is one of the most important churches in London architecturally. Built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century, it is now an integral part of the Inns of Court who first leased the building in the 14th century and were granted the freehold by James I. The history of this round church is well documented in this book, and there are paintings by Rowlandson, Buckler and Shepherd, as well as watercolours by Wykeham Archer. There are descriptions of the 'restorations' by Wren and Victorian architects, and the devastating fire by bombing in 1941.
