The author takes us from the Globe of Shakespeare's time to the modern Globe on the south bank. There are bad times and heydays. The former was during the Commonwealth, or later when melodrama seemed the only fare possible - just as today musicals dominate the London auditoriums. The heydays include the building spree of the 19th century when many of our much loved theatres were built, the formation of the National Theatre, and the abolition of the Lord Chancellor's power of censorship in 1968.
