There is the fascinating story of the Metropole Hotel from its construction to its role in the Second World War. The Vallances produced doctors, soldiers, an inventor and were landowners and shipowners too. They ran a notable brewery in West Street and owned many pubs. But they were benevolent employers presenting the inn keepers and beer sellers with a turkey at Christmas while every employee enjoyed free beef and beer.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Judy Middleton is a well-respected local historian and has written a great number of books on Sussex, the first of these being A History of Hove in 1979. She was born in Hove, where she still lives, and worked for thirty years at Hove Library. She has three children and three grandchildren.
